Tapan was born in Kolkata, India. His schooling in St. Paul's School, situated in the quaint Himalayan hill town of Darjeeling, left a profound impact on him. Those years helped shape a unique visual aesthetic and it is here that he was first introduced to the world of film and photography. Tapan further went on to study cinematography in India's prestigious Film and Television Institute of India.

In the year 2012, Tapan started shooting commercials and has shot over 300 commercials till date. Some of the brands he shot for are Ford, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Sony, Procter and Gamble, Levis, Kelloggs, Nestle, Fisher Price, Adidas, Bacardi, Jameson, Mirinda, Nokia, Micromax, Tata Indica, Maruti Suzuki, Hero, Datsun, Kuoni, Virgin Mobile, Idea, Airtel, Bangladesh Cricket Board, Cadbury, Britannia, ITC Sunfeast, Tata Tea, Emirates Bank Dubai, Co-op Bank Kenya, National Bank Kenyaand Lifebuoy among several others.

Tapan got shortlisted for Cinematography under the Film-craft Category at the Cannes Lion (2013), for his commercial - Lifebuoy Gondappa. The same commercial also won him a Silver ABBY for Cinematography at the 2014 Goafest, Bronze Spike for Cinematography at the 2013 Spike Asia in Singapore. Tapan won the award for Best Cinematography at the 5th Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival 2015, for Micromax commercial. In 2016 he again won the Best Cinematography award at 6th Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival for Havells wire and Bronze ABBY at Goafest for Havells.

Tapan's gift lies in capturing the soul of a story and transforming every frame to a delightful visual. He maintains a steady balance of artistry and sound technique to narrate a story with grace and elegance. Tapan's repertoire extends beyond his work in India. He has gained firm footing in the advertisement industries of South Asia, Middle East and Africa as well. With many prominent brands, agencies, directors and films to his credit, he continues travelling and shooting commercials world over.
Currently he just finished shooting his first Feature Film Kahaani 2.
